NEW Glen Gazette
Written for, by, and about the residents of
The Glen of Pacific Grove

Have you ever wondered about those fuzzy
caterpillars that seem to be everywhere this time of year? Well I have, so
I decided to see what I could find out about them!
These pesky little critters are called
halisidota argentata or Silverspotted Tiger Moth. That’s right, they turn
into moths, not lovely butterflies! They
are about
1 inch long and densely covered with tufts of brown or black poisonous
hairs. They feed on pine trees and needles (no wonder we have
so many!) They are wandering now to seek a sheltered location to spin a
cocoon of silk, and then emerge in late summer as moths.
The caterpillar can sting causing a reaction
ranging from mild to severe. Their fuzzy hair is
similar to glass fibers (hairs break off in skin easily) sometimes causing
pain like a needle prick.
Stings
generally occur when accidentally brushing against one of these caterpillars
or attempting to remove it by hand from clothing or on the body.
Be
careful when attempting to brush them off. Never swat or crush by hand.
Remove them carefully and slowly with a stick or other object.
Children
should be cautioned about handling or playing with any colorful, hairy-like,
fuzzy caterpillars.
The good
news is that many of these caterpillars don’t make it to a moth as they are
preyed upon by spiders and birds. So bluejays and crows…go to work!
HELLOS AND GOODBYES:
Welcome to Jim and Florence McCoy in #74.
They have decided to retire in The Glen and have come all the way from
Carmel! We are glad to have them as our new neighbors.
As the days continue to get longer and the
weather gets warmer, more folks will be out walking in the evenings. This
is a nice time to greet and meet!
GARDENING:
The Glen Gardening Committee gets busier as
the weather gets better! Many ‘tired’ plants are being replaced with new
plantings. The gardeners are hard at work and it shows!
A reminder: If you have any gardening
requests or concerns, please write a note to Sharon Axt:
include Unit #, and contact name and phone number. Put the written request
in The Glen mailbox.
GARAGE SALE:
There has been very little commitment for
participation in a garage sale. Therefore, the May date will be postponed.
If you are interested in a garage sale, please drop a note in The Glen
mailbox with your name and unit number. We will try for another date if
there is enough interest.
Our garbage service will be having another
clean-up week this month. We are scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th.
You may put out up to seven bags in addition to your regular garbage. (No
bulky items or hazardous waste). This is always a good opportunity to get
rid of some unwanted stuff.
THE GLEN BOOK CLUB:
March reading was a fun novel called
Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons
by Lorna Landvik. The club met April 5th at Candy Pollock’s
home (#110).
April had us reading One Thousand White
Women: the Journals of May Dodd , by Jim Fergus.
This book is a fictional account of a U.S.
Western event that did not happen but was proposed.
Dodd’s journals describe the marriages of
these white (and black) women to Cheyenne Indians and life on the prairie.
May’s meeting was held at Sharon Axt’s home.
Any woman interested in joining the club can
contact Sharon in #13 for meeting information.
CONGRATULATIONS:
To Nancy Budd (#25)
Kudos to Nancy on being named April Volunteer
of the Month by the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations
Nancy!
VOLUNTEERS:
Speaking of volunteers, The Glen is always
looking for people to help. There is a board and several committees that
must function to keep The Glen the special place that it is. It’s not too
soon to start thinking about how you might serve. There will be 3 board
positions up for election this fall and there will be some retirement from
the board this year.
The gardening committee will also see a
resignation in the fall, so if you are good with plants, this might be a
spot for you.
New faces will be needed. Give it some
thought!
VENDOR INFORMATION for web
site:
Can you recommend a service vendor to others
living in The Glen? (furnace repair, plumber, painter, electrician,
handyman, construction, etc.)
On the web page of The Glen, there is a page
called “Living in The Glen” that contains some good information. We would
like to add a list of vendors as a guide for residents to use when there is
a need for repair or modification of our homes. If you have a vendor for
the list, we need the name of the person/company, their phone number, and
your name and unit number so folks can talk with you about the vendor.
Send your suggestions as an email to Ken
Morley
kenmor@ispwest.com or as a note in The Glen mailbox.
CLASSIFIED:
Something around that you would like to sell?
Write out the information to include item description, price, and your phone
number and drop it in The Glen mailbox.
THE BOARD NEWS
Diana Busman
The painting of the Glen is now complete and
it looks great. The early and extended rainy season caused some delays but
our contractor, EKIM Painting, managed to work around the problems and did
an excellent job. A lot of the credit can go to our own Jack Rugar and Candy
Pollock, for their efforts in coordinating the project. Many thanks to them
both.
We are still looking for a permanent outside
location to hold our monthly Board meetings. If anyone has a suggestion,
please contact any member of the Board or leave a message on the Association
answering service.
We are making plans to have the Association’s
Insurance Agent, Jeff Kane, attend a Board meeting where he could give us a
summary of our coverage and be available to handle questions from the floor.
The date will be announced.
Have you checked out our WEB page yet? It is
theglenofpg.com. Our Webmasters, Glen Grossman and Ken Morley have done a
great job and are still expanding the site with the addition of new and
interesting information concerning The Glen and Pacific Grove. Many thanks
to them.
RULES:
The following rules were amended at the last
meeting:
1. Rule D was amended to
read as follows:
There are only 15 Guest
Parking spaces for 60 units in the Glen. Therefore:
1. “Guest Parking”
is primarily for use of visitors. Homeowners and their tenants or lessees
(residents) are not to use “Guest Parking” on a regular basis. Guest Parking
may be used by residents only for very short term parking. Residents are to
use their garages for overnight parking or park their vehicles outside the
gate. See Section K FINES below for schedule of fines. On the third
violation for parking in “Guest Parking”, the Association may have the
vehicle towed without notice.
2. Residents must request a parking permit from a board member for
any visitor parking in “Guest Parking” more than seven (7) days or for
resident use of Guest Parking for more than half a day.
3. Glen Lake Drive is a designated fire lane. Do not park on Glen
Lake Drive at any time. Vehicles so parked constitute a hazard to all
homeowners and are subject to towing without notice.
4. If a vehicle is parked in a driveway, the vehicle must be parked
so that it does not extend beyond the driveway onto Glen Lake Drive.
2. Rule J was amended to
read in part:
An ACC request must be
submitted whenever an owner wishes to replace a garage door. The new door
will conform in color and design to existing doors. It is intended that the
color of all new metal doors match any adjacent door.
