IS IT FALL OR IS IT AUTUMN?
I’ve often wondered why this season has two names;
sometimes I say it is fall, and other times, I say it is autumn. The
dictionary says autumn is the season between summer and winter; lasting from
September to December. It is also noted as the season when the leaves fall
from the trees. Is that where we got the notion to call it fall? Whatever
you wish to call it, it remains a wonderful time of year. The season brings
images of warm family times; fireplaces lit, wonderful smells from the oven,
and preparations for the long winter. Outdoor things we have enjoyed all
summer are now put away. There are still hours of sun that warm the leaves
that have fallen on the ground. We watch our trees begin to rest for the
winter and the birds and squirrels hide away food.
It’s nice to know that even as we tighten up our homes
for the cold and wet season, within our gates of The Glen, we still will be
out and about, greeting each other as always.
As Thanksgiving approaches, we can all take a moment
and look about us. It doesn’t take much to realize what a wonderful place
this is! I am so thankful for everything and everyone that makes The Glen
what it is.

HELLOS AND GOODBYES:
Three very difficult goodbyes hit us this fall.
Our final goodbye was given to Jack and Carol
Rutherford. They will be missed for the work they did in The Glen and for
the friendships made here. They were presented with a watercolor of the
lake and Carol’s duckhouse! We’ll look forward to their visits from their
new home in Santa Rosa.
Diana and Rick Busman have moved into a home in
Carmel. Rick has worked hard with Jim Ray and our budget committees. He
has assisted greatly with the accounting aspects of The Glen and we thank
him. Diana has served as our president of The Glen for the past year. She
has dealt with many difficult obstacles and done an outstanding job. We
appreciate all her efforts and wish them well in their new home.
Craig and
Phoebe Woolley have lived at 26 Glen Lake Drive for the past 22 years. They
were always gone for the summer months, but with us the rest of the year.
They were frequently seen on the tennis court, out walking the dog, or just
visiting with neighbors. Craig had taken all the emergency preparedness
classes in Pacific Grove and was behind the forming of our preparedness
committee and our bin of emergency supplies. This was
|
important to Craig and he helped make it important to
us. We thank him for that! Phoebe was an active member of The Glen book
club. Her recent stroke will prevent them from returning to The Glen. They
will stay back east, living near their daughter for assistance with her
care. We will miss them greatly and send all our love and best wishes to
Phoebe! Let’s hope we hear from them often!
Michael Bona has lived at 100 Glen Lake Drive for
several years and has moved to a home in Pebble Beach.
Welcome to our many new neighbors:
Lynn Bomberger is our new welcome committee.
Thank you Lynn for taking on this task.

WELCOME TO ALL
OUR NEW GLEN NEIGHBORS!
GARDENING:
Please drop a note in The Glen mailbox if there is a
particular area you have a request for or for any comments you may wish to
leave.
Our gardeners continue to do a great job.
*Please remember, all gardening requests must go thru
the gardening committee. The gardeners have a prefixed schedule of tasks.
Your request will be added to that list.
THE GLEN BOOK CLUB:
Submitted by Sharon Axt
Ladies of
the Glen: Do you enjoy reading? Would you like to get to know some of your
neighbors a little better? Our book group meets once a month on
|
the first Tuesday at 7pm. We rotate our meeting
locations alphabetically, and the good news is that there is no driving,
just a stroll up or down the street! Each hostess provides refreshments; we
socialize and then discuss our selected book.
In the past year we have read about and discussed
Afghanistan, Antarctica, the world of Islamic women, breast cancer, autism,
plague in San Francisco in the 1900’s, founding mothers of the American
Revolution, black beekeeping sisters
in the American South in 1964, and for the past two months we have
been reading East of Eden. At our November meeting, we had a great
discussion on the book and a most informative presentation by Dorothy Adams
on the life of John Steinbeck.
We have had an excursion to SF Chinatown, attended a
lecture by one of our selected authors, invited a young woman to speak to
our group about her life as a young child in Afghanistan and how her life
changed when her family came to the United States, celebrated our first
anniversary with a dinner at Fifi’s, and our next adventure will be to the
Steinbeck Museum with lunch at the Steinbeck home.
Our meetings are informal. We all suggest titles to
read and selection is by group agreement. We try to select books that are in
paperback and for those who need a copy, we order through Amazon.com, taking
advantage of their prices and free shipping.
If this sounds interesting to you, please join us for a
meeting. For more information, contact Sharon Axt at #13,
sharonaxt@comcast.net.
GlenEtiquette:
(friendly reminders of respectful considerations that
promote harmonious living in The Glen)
Several of our residents work that wonderful night
shift! We all love to be out and about chatting with neighbors, but keep in
mind that many bedroom windows are right by the street. Someone may be
sleeping!
Odds and
Ends:
The
speed limit is 15miles/hr.
There are
small children about The Glen. Please motion offenders to slow down.
|
Glen Lake Drive is a Fire lane; please remember that
this lane is a no parking lane all of the time. Help us enforce the
parking rules within The Glen.
Peanut Shells: These can be a real problem.
They are showing up everywhere. The birds dig in flower pots to hide them.
Please do not leave peanuts out for the birds!
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS:
Several years ago, we completed emergency
questionnaires. Stephanie Lee heads this committee and has compiled all
this information. Residents have changed and people’s needs may also have
changed. Therefore, we are including a questionnaire with this mailing and
ask you to again fill one out so we can have current information. Please
drop in The Glen mailbox when completed.

NEW DIRECTORS:
There are openings for 3 new directors this year. If
serving on the board is something you have considered, this is the time to
come forward. Get involved in your community. If there is a committee
you’d like to serve on, let us know that also. It takes many people working
together to make our neighborhood great.
The
annual meeting will be on November 15th at 7 PM. It is most
important that you plan to attend or give your proxy to someone.

THE BOARD NEWS:
