VACATIONS:
Vacations; everyone takes them. Some are short,
some unplanned, some far and exotic, and others quite simple.
Regardless, they are meant to be a time for fun and refreshment. I’ve
taken several this past year; some very short, and some unplanned.
Sometimes, I really didn’t even want to go! “Why,” I asked myself.
Could it be that we live in such a wonderful place? I just plain love
to be here at home in The Glen of PG! We are so lucky for the beauty
about us on the Monterey Peninsula and for the beauty of The Glen.
Maybe the best vacations are when we take time off and just stay home!
Dorothy couldn’t have said it better on her return trip from Oz …“there’s
no place like home!”
In September, I will be taking a far vacation. It
is time for me to go visit my son in Japan and then on to Bangkok to see
extended family. Thus, the reason for the combined newsletter for
August and September. It will be a wonderful time, but I know I
will be glad to return to my sweet home here in The Glen!
THE MONTHS OF AUGUST/SEPTEMBER
August: National Friendship Day, Senior Citizen
Day, Left Hander’s Day, and Women’s Equality Day.
September: Labor Day, Grandparents Day, Teachers
Day, and National Days of Prayer.
HELLOS
AND GOODBYES: |
The Graves family has moved from unit #14. They
have completed their military assignment here and are now stationed in New
Orleans. We wish them well.
The Lee family in #52 has been a long time resident in
The Glen. They have moved to a home near Salinas. We hope to
continue to see them on their visits to The Glen.
The McDowell’s from #92 have moved to Seattle.
Mr. & Mrs. Kakis from #48 have left to make Sun City in
the desert their permanent home.
Some goodbyes are most difficult as will be for #36.
Jack and Carol Rutherford have lived in The Glen for 9 years and have been
involved from the first day. Jack has put in countless hours of
service; taking care of our maintenance needs, overseeing the care of our
lake, serving on many committees, assisting with budgeting issues, and just
being an active board member. I don’t think there is anyone who does
not know Jack. Carol served many years on the gardening committee, and
most recently has been our Welcoming committee. You have both been great
friends to us, and you will be missed!
The good news is that they will still be here in The
Glen until the end of October, staying in #34. This will give us all a
chance to extend our best wishes!
We welcome the return to The Glen of Diane Hardcastle
and her husband to #65. It’s great having you back!
The new owner of #92 is Lynn Bomberger and Lynn has
already attended a board meeting! Lynn, we welcome you as an active
resident in The Glen!
The new owners of #36 are John & Sue Runsbold from San
Jose who will be part time residents. We look forward to meeting you
all!

Remember the Bolen’s who moved last spring from #88?
Todd, Anne, and baby Katherine are just now moving into their new home in
Ewa Beach, Hawaii and are enjoying living there.
GARDENING:
Rodger & Sharon Axt
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your
Gardening Committee for the past year. Rodger and I have enjoyed the chance
to become better acquainted with our neighbors and our lovely grounds here
at The Glen. Due to new and additional commitments for both of us, both
personally and professionally, we are resigning from the committee effective
September 1.
As the nursery rhyme asks: “Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
how does your garden grow?” We know it takes more than silver bells and
cockleshells to create an attractive, thriving garden. Hard work, creativity
and a love of beauty can make a garden of paradise, no matter the size.
There are, after all, two kinds of garden makers: those who love gardening
and those who simply love gardens. As residents of The Glen of PG, we share
a common interest in the health and beauty of the grounds. The grounds here
are extensive and their attractiveness add significantly to our quality of
life here at The Glen and ultimately to the value of our real estate.
We will be happy and willing to assist the new
committee in the transition by providing all accumulated information over
the past year, which is in an organized binder. In addition, a copy of
Sunset Western Garden Book, a reference guide, will be turned over to the
new committee chair.
…from the editor…
We all greatly appreciate the work Sharon and Rodger
gave to gardening efforts this past year. Our landscapes have never looked
better!
Tree work in The Glen has become its own sub committee;
thank you Rodger for taking on this task. There are hundreds of trees
in The Glen and they need ongoing attention and care to stay healthy.
Rodger will continue to oversee this work.
*Please remember, all gardening requests must go thru
the gardening committee. The gardeners have a prefixed schedule of
tasks. Your request will be added to that list.
THE GLEN BOOK CLUB:
|
Submitted by Sharon Axt
On August 2nd,
our book group met to discuss The Secret Life of Bees, a
novel by Sue Monk Kidd. Set in the American South in 1964, it was a favorite
of most everyone present. Seven members of the group met and walked together
to Fifi's restaurant/bistro, a favorite local spot to discuss the title and
to celebrate our first anniversary. Dinner started at 7pm and we closed the
restaurant sometime around 9:30. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal together as
well as the discussions-not only about the book but also personal
conversations. Awards were given, and we talked about finding the "right"
name for our reading group. Dorothy Adams asked, "What's in a name?" Could
it be that we have finally found a name? Stay tuned for our September
meeting.
Our reading selection to discuss in
September is The Bookseller of Kabul, by Asne Seierstad, a Norwegian
journalist. Our choice for October brings us home to Steinbeck, with East
of Eden.
For more information about our
reading group, please contact Sharon Axt at #13.
GlenEtiquette:
(friendly reminders of respectful considerations that
promote harmony in living in The Glen)
Need to wash clothes? You should be able to do
that at a convenient time for you. But wait; not so if you live in a 2
story unit that adjoins a 1 story. Washing late at night can be a real
disturbance to your neighbor. Remember that the one story master
bedroom wall shares your garage wall. Be considerate of your sleeping
neighbor.
Odds and Ends:
Fire lane in The Glen; please remember that this lane
is a no parking lane all of the time. Help us enforce the
parking rules within The Glen.
Please refrain from feeding the wildlife in The Glen;
birds, ducks, cats, etc. This would include whole peanuts as the
shells become litter in gardens and on lawns.
Trucks entering The Glen: If you have a moving
van coming to The Glen, please inform the company ahead of time of the size
restrictions as posted outside the gate. We have recently had a couple
hits to the center island as oversized trucks attempt to enter the gate.
New
Windows: If you are planning on installing new windows in your unit,
please donate your old window screens to The Glen. There are always
|
residents who are in need. Your old ones may be
better than others.
CLASSIFIED:
NEEDED: to borrow for use in The Glen;
An electronic metal detector, to be used to find sewer cleanouts that are
hidden in the dirt. If you have a detector to loan or know someone
who might loan to us please call Ken Morley at 655-1639 or Jack Rugar at
647-8431.
FREE: Three door gates for children or for pets.
Call 386, the Morley’s at 655-1639
For Sale: New, never used, but out of box, window
air conditioner unit. Best offer. Call 644-0304 and leave
message.
Something around that you would like to sell?
Write out the information to include item description, price, and your phone
number and drop it in The Glen mailbox.
THE BOARD NEWS:
This fall, there will be 3 positions open on the board.
Diana Busman will be leaving for family reasons. Diana has served as
our president this past year and we thank her for her hard work.
Please consider how you might help; either as a board member or on a
committee. There are several jobs open.
CC&R Revision is still an unsolved issue. The
agreement on this issue is that there is not enough information for
residents. Therefore, there will be ageneral informative session this fall.
It is highly important for you to plan to attend. More information
will follow as the meeting is planned.
If you are confused and have questions on this issue,
stop and talk to a board member.
The next board meeting
will be Tuesday, September 20th at 6PM.
Location of this
meeting yet to be announced.
